To my utter disbelief, the dinner went well. Indeed, Alexander’s uncle and aunt were real sweethearts. As he’d said, they didn’t even look at my outfit and welcomed me with open arms.

George, his uncle, happened to be the man I’d first met at the agency, and Rosa, his aunt and Alberto’s older sister was the woman he danced with at the club. She is Mexican-American, born in the US. It explained her love for the Latino dances and her cooking talents.

Perhaps I should ask her for some recipes and tricks. I knew the basics and how to make some decent meals, but nothing compared to these. Her chicken enchiladas and cheesy quesadillas were delicious. I was stuffed. And those margaritas... Dios Mio! Yes, I’ve also learned some Spanish in the process. Though I only had one glass. I didn’t want to end up wasted in front of them. Could you imagine? What a nightmare!

During dinner, I learned a lot more about Alexander and his family. I knew he would come to San Diego during the holidays with his older brother. George was his father’s brother and his only uncle since his mother was an only child, like me.

Moreover, Rosa and George told stories about Alexander. Some were sweet, others rather funny. For instance, the first time he went to the San Diego Zoo, he tried to bring home a baby goat, but the small animal escaped from his backpack. Or, when he was fifteen, he got caught by a girl’s dad when they were kissing, and the man went after him on the beach. Also, one time when they went to the swimming pool he hid his brother’s swim trunks, leaving him in his underwear.

He wasn’t all mischief, when he got older he volunteered to help children have access to education in the poorest countries. He would throw a party to raise funds every year and send the money to an association back there.

Rosa and George also told me how much they’d missed him when he went to college. Every time they talked about him, you could only see fondness and love in their eyes. They genuinely treated him like a son. I didn’t dare ask them why they hadn’t any children of their own. They also showed me pictures of a younger Alexander and I oohed and aahed every one of them. The more I learned about him, the more I liked him. He truly was a nice guy with a big heart.

“Alexander is so tenderhearted. He always wants to help others. He went through a bad spell last year, but now he’s feeling better. Since he moved here, it’s as if I’ve found my boy again. He looks happy around you, Victoria,” Rosa said to me in all honesty once we’d finished eating. The men were in the living room watching a football game and Rosa and I were sipping coffee, in the adjacent dining room.

I was about to ask her what bad thing happened to him last year when she cut me off.
